It’s the time of year that you and your family have been waiting for! The weather is getting warmer, businesses are opening up again, and the kids are out of school. You may have a big family vacation planned or maybe you’re just looking forward to relaxing in your lawn chairs in the backyard. No matter how you’re spending your summer vacation, it’s important to keep oral health in mind, especially for the younger members of the family. Your children’s dentist in Center shares some tips to help your family keep healthy smiles through summer vacation.

Maintain an Oral Hygiene Routine

While the kids are out of school and your daily schedule is changing, it is possible that your routine has been thrown off. It’s normal that things run a little bit differently in the summer, but one thing that shouldn’t lack is your family’s oral hygiene routine. No matter what time of year it is, it’s important for people of all ages to brush twice and floss once daily. Consider adding mouthwash for an even better clean!

Your Teeth Are Not Tools!

The purpose of your teeth is to chew your food. Remind your kids that their teeth are not made for opening packages or biting on non-food items. Doing so can lead to broken, chipped, and cracked teeth. This means less time having fun and more time in the dental chair.

Choose Snacks Carefully

There is nothing wrong with indulging in a sugary drink or carb-heavy treat once in a while. However, they should not be enjoyed on a regular basis. Instead, stock up on healthy snacks and drinks. This includes high fiber fruits and veggies like baby carrots, sliced apples, and pears. Cheese, yogurt, and nuts are also great options. Instead of soda or juice, reach for water, milk, or green tea.

Invest in a Custom-Made Mouthguard

The weather is getting nicer which means your kids may be outside playing sports. Staying active is great for everyone’s health, but it also increases the risk of dental injuries and emergencies. By wearing a custom-made mouthguard from your dentist, your kids can continue having fun while protecting their smiles.

Stay Hydrated!

Drinking plenty of water is necessary for almost every part of your body to function properly, including the teeth. Water is extremely beneficial for oral health. It reduces dry mouth, keeps teeth cleaner, and often contains fluoride. Staying hydrated protects teeth from bacteria growth and tooth decay. Remind your kids to drink plenty of water, especially when they are spending time outside.

Protect Your Lips

Spending time out in the sun is great and important if you’re trying to stay healthy. However, too much sun exposure can lead to a variety of issues, including skin cancer. Make sure your family is using lip balm with SPF 15 or higher, along with sunscreen, while spending time outdoors.

Summer is a time for fun, especially for kids! But nobody wants to spend extra time in the dental office to deal with cavities or broken teeth. Follow these tips to keep your family’s smiles healthy.
