Frequently Asked Dentistry Questions

Our dental patients ask us interesting questions every day, and our dentistry team is always happy to answer them, because in our experience, the more a patient knows, the healthier they usually are! Below, we’ve compiled answers to some of the most popular questions so you can quickly boost your dental knowledge. If there is anything else you’d like to know, feel free to give us a call anytime—we’re always eager to talk to you!

How often should I visit the dentist?

Our dentists (as well as the American Dental Association) recommend that patients of all ages should attend at least two checkup and cleaning appointments each year. These visits are the best way to make sure small issues are caught and handled early, plus they can go a long way in stopping cavities and gum disease from developing in the first place.

When should I bring my child to the dentist for the first time?

You should schedule your child’s first appointment as soon as their first teeth come in or around their first birthday—whichever one comes first! This initial appointment will enable their dentist to make sure your child’s teeth and mouth are developing correctly, plus they can give you tips on how to take care of your brand new smile.

Why do I need dental cleanings if I brush/floss my teeth every day?

While home oral hygiene is absolutely essential to your oral health, the truth is that your tools at home simply aren’t able to clean every single tiny surface in your mouth. Plaque can become trapped in these hard-to-reach spots, leading to tooth decay and cavities. Professional cleanings by our hygiene team are able to target these trouble areas so your smile stays healthy year round.

I am/my child is really nervous about going to the dentist. Can you help?

Yes! Our dental office is great at helping anxious patients feel completely comfortable no matter what kind of procedure they need. With sedation dentistry, we can calm racing minds and prevent patients from feeling any physical discomfort so they’re always able to have a relaxing visit.

Help! I’m in a lot of dental pain! What should I do?

If you’re dealing with a dental emergency, go ahead and give our dental office a call. Our team will walk you through first-aid tips over the phone, and if needed, we can schedule a same-day appointment for you as well. Whether you’re dealing with a toothache, chipped tooth, or knocked out tooth, you can trust we’ll be able to take care of you right away.

Do you accept dental insurance?

Yes, the Family Dental Center of East Texas is happy to accept and maximize all kinds of dental insurance. We can work with PPO plans, Medicaid, CHIP, and Texas STAR. Give us a call to learn how we can use your particular plan at your next visit.

I don’t have insurance. Is there a way I can finance my dental care?

Yes. You can sign up for a low-to-no interest payment plan with CareCredit right through our website. We have worked with them for years, and they offer an easy way for patients to break up the cost of their dental care so it’s much more affordable.
