Why Is Your Toothache Hurting More at Night?

Man with a nighttime toothache

At the end of the day, you may be excited to simply get into bed and relax the night away. Sleep may be calling your name, and you are getting ready to answer. As you bring your blanket up and sink into your pillow, are you getting interrupted by a toothache? It might’ve been minor or minimal earlier, so why is it getting worse now? Here’s what you need to know and why you should call your dentist first thing in the morning.

What’s Making My Toothache Hurt More?

There are several reasons why your dental discomfort is hurting more, such as:

  • Lying Down: As you go prone, your heart gets in line with your face. It will have an easier time pumping blood to it, which can increase your blood pressure. This can make you feel your tooth more.
  • Less Distractions: Throughout the day, your attention may be elsewhere. From a bumpy road to dogs barking, you may not even notice any dental pain in the first place.
  • Grind and Clench Your Teeth: If you feel your toothache more when you wake up, then it may be from grinding or clenching your teeth. This may be a subconscious habit that makes your jaw sore and wears your smile faster.
  • Late Night Snack: Before getting into bed, you might’ve enjoyed a quick meal. A stray piece of food may be stuck between your teeth, causing the discomfort you’re feeling now. Simply brush and floss once more to remove any debris and lower your risk of a cavity.

Do I Need to Call My Dentist About My Toothache?

Although there are several reasons why your toothache may be worse at night, it’s important that you call your dentist in the morning. There may be an underlying reason why it’s hurting, and your provider can get to the bottom of it. By getting it sorted out right away, you can get back to the restful, calmer nights you deserve.
