If you’ve been recommended a dental crown by your dentist, you may be wondering what to expect from this treatment, especially if you’ve never had one before. In fact, many patients are scared that the procedure may be painful. The good news is that with this ‘royal’ treatment, there’s nothing to worry about! Here’s what happens during a dental crown procedure, and why you won’t regret restoring your smile!

What is a Dental Crown?

Think of a dental crown as a deluxe filling. It is essentially a large cap that fits over the tooth to restore its appearance and function. Because it is made from impressions of your existing tooth, it both looks and feels natural, and because it’s made from strong, durable materials it can be used just like a real tooth!

What Happens During a Dental Crown Procedure?

When getting a dental crown, it’s normal to be a little worried about pain. The great news is that the first step your dentist will take is to numb the tooth and surrounding area. Then, after impressions are made, the damaged enamel will be removed and the tooth reshaped to make room for the crown. A temporary crown will then be placed on the tooth, and you will be free to go back to your daily routine. In about two weeks, you’ll return to your dentist’s office once your real crown has been delivered from the dental lab. Your dentist will then remove the temporary crown, clean the tooth, and attach the new crown so it stays in place in your smile for up to ten years with proper care.

If you are anxious or afraid, your dentist also offers sedation options to help make even routine cleanings more comfortable, so speak to your dental team when making your appointment to discuss your options.

How Do I Care for My New Dental Crown?

Caring for dental crowns is as easy as for your real teeth. With a temporary crown, be sure to avoid anything too crunchy or sticky, as this could loosen it or cause it to come off. With permanent crowns, you can expand your diet a bit more, however, do be sure to avoid using it to eat anything too hard, and never use your teeth (real or prosthetic) as tools for things like opening packaging or biting your fingernails. Furthermore, if you grind your teeth or play sports, be sure to wear a mouthguard to protect your smile from accidental injury.

Dental crowns can be brushed and flossed just like real teeth but be aware that products like whitening gels or toothpastes won’t change their shade. Thus, if yours has become discolored or stained, speak to your dentist about having it re-shaded or replaced.

Remember, while it may be a little scary hearing that you need a dental crown, the good news is that this procedure is safe, effective, and your mouth will be numb, too. More importantly, keep in mind that restoring and protecting your tooth now will save you plenty of time, money, and discomfort down the road!
