Asthma is an inflammatory illness that restricts the airways, leading to symptoms like wheezing, difficulty breathing, coughing, and tightness in the chest. There are about 235 million people with asthma across the planet, and many of them may not be aware of how their symptoms can affect the health of their mouths. Here’s how asthma can affect your oral health and a few tips for keeping your gums healthy and your plaque levels under control.

Asthma Can Lead to Dry Mouth

Many people with asthma occasionally experience dry mouth, a condition that results from inadequate saliva production. This may happen because restriction of the airway can lead an asthmatic to breathe through their mouth, which can evaporate saliva. The inhalers used to treat asthma can also exacerbate this problem by reducing saliva production.

Saliva is an essential part of your mouth’s natural cleaning process. It helps flush away food debris and harmful chemicals while limiting the growth of plaque and bacteria. Someone with dry mouth may develop bad breath or oral infections like tooth decay or gum disease.

How Can I Keep My Mouth Healthy if I Have Asthma?

There are effective ways for patients to protect their oral health if they have asthma. Drinking plenty of water and chewing sugar-free gum can help stimulate saliva production, and it’s a great idea to get into the habit of rinsing your mouth with water after using your inhaler. If your current inhaler is sweetened with sugar, ask your doctor about a sugar-free alternative. Of course, you should also practice excellent oral hygiene by brushing, flossing, and rinsing with antibacterial mouthwash every day.

Being mindful of your asthma symptoms and seeing your dentist regularly can do a lot to preserve your oral health. By drinking plenty of water and practicing proper hygiene, you can help your teeth look great for years to come.

About the Practice

Family Dental Center of East Texas delivers stellar dental services to the community of Center, TX.
